About the Author(s)
Abram Bergen
Abram Bergen is a freelance writer and reviewer of literature born, quite by accident, in London, ON. The son of Mexican-born Russian Mennonites, he spent his childhood years living in small towns and villages in Chihuahua, Mexico.
Languishing beneath the clutter of his overheated brain is his mother tongue, Plautdietsch (Mennonite German/Low German/Mennonite Platt), along with German and Spanish. Almost as neglected is his oft-renewed resolution to spend more time with them. English, it would seem, has gotten the upper hand.
He's tried his hand at farming, fabrication, teaching, even trucking, but he is above all a man of ideas and of words. His day job in an office, though currently his bread and margarine, keeps him too much removed from the world of ideas and words; from thinking, reading, writing.
Thus far he has mainly published articles and book reviews in Blogcritics Magazine, an online community of writers. A number of book reviews--of fiction, non-fiction, and poetry--have also been syndicated to Advance.net and Boston.com, appearing in books sections of online newspapers across the United States. He is a member of the National Book Critics Circle.
He has a B.A. from McMaster University in Eastern & Comparative Religion, a B.A. Hon. (Summa Cum Laude) in English, also from McMaster, and a B.Ed. from OISE/University of Toronto.
He now lives with his partner in Guelph, ON.
Reading/Writing Interests
Abram reads postcolonial and postmodern (anglophone) fiction, poetry and selected non-fiction. He has special research/writing interests in gender & sexuality issues, hybridity and identity politics, secular ethics, and environmentally-friendly technologies and lifestyles.
